Hi, I’m Carlos
Hey there! I'm Carlos, and I'm the Head of Video Production & Editing for SproutBox. I am a native Yooper - that is, a citizen of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, to anyone unfamiliar. I was born just a mile from the Canada-U.S. border in Sault Ste. Marie, and raised in the tiny abandoned depot town of Nestoria.
In a sense, I think growing up in such a remote area has shaped my personality into somewhat of a mess: an endlessly curious, artistic, introspective yet extroverted country kid with an unbalanced sense of caution and chaos, all the while almost as natural as the two-track trails through the grassy highlands I call home. I'm a published photographer and an avid poet, but I find the most solace in wrenching on bikes and I could talk about cars for hours (that's the first thing you'll notice when talking with me anywhere near a public road).
What it's also done is inspire me to learn more about where our food truly comes from. I wouldn't describe myself as a health nut, but I'm always eyeing nutrition labels and steering clear of processed foods that are full of preservatives and chemicals. Since turning to look for more natural options, I've taken an interest in everything green; one of my favorite things to do when hiking is keep an eye out for wintergreen and Morel mushrooms, two species that are relatively abundant in the U.P.
Although I'm pursuing a Bachelor's degree in the completely unrelated field of Mechanical Engineering Technology, I am still - and always will be - very passionate about my roots and the roots of the plants we admire and consume. I am a wanderer, and as I live my years my goal is to travel as much as I can, learning more and more about what nature has to offer to us and our human world. For now, though, I plan to help SproutBox provide some of that knowledge to our small community and beyond!
A Few Hobbies Of Mine!
Rock climbing in the past 9 months or so has been one of my favorite things to do, and you really feel like a mountain goat whenever you’re outside climbing. My friend Logan introduced me to it back in August 2024, and I’ve been spending as much free time as I can climbing a rock or doing something physical.
Here’s a beautiful picture of me (in the middle) and a bunch of my friends at Little Presque Isle, probably my favorite beach in Marquette. The northern lights were out that night, and it’s definitely one of my most cherished memories here. I’m in love with anything outdoors.
Concerts! (Or anything music-related really.) Also a bit of a recent hobby; I went to my first concert only a little over a year ago!! Since then, I’ve been completely hooked, and have definitely spent way more than I should have at them in the past year.
